Christianity, human origins and sin

An interesting new discussion is occurring concerning the historicity of Adam and Eve and how important it might be for Christian doctrine to insist that they were historical persons.

Many Christians are OK these days with accepting the science of evolution (as opposed to evolution as part of a philosophical naturalism). They accept that God could well have designed a world in which processes evolved over 13 billion years or so. And they seem comfortable holding that somewhere in that process God intervened to create two “first humans.” However the evidence seems to suggest that humanity evolved gradually and probably in a number of places and there never were two pristine, unsinful humans. So how can or should Christian doctrine adjust to these facts?
